Katawa Shoujo is a free-to-play role-playing experience from Four Leaf Studios, an international team of amateur developers. In this visual novel, you play a normal boy whose life turns upside down after finding that he has a congenital heart defect. Moving into a new town, he finds new friends, and possibly love, with five female leads from the fictional Yamaku High School.

With multiple paths available, plus its heartwarming message, Katawa Shoujo is a voiceless replayable sim that will definitely tug at some heartstrings. Be warned of some adult content, though. You can also try JOHN DOE or Infinite Stars.

The unique part about the Katawa Shoujo premise is that most of the main characters suffer from a disability of some sort. Apart from your character, Hisao Nakai, with his heart problem, you have female protagonists that are blind, deaf and mute, or have some other kind of physical disability. This representation opens a new perspective for most players, making its story more impactful.

In terms of content, it has five main paths you can pursue, each leading to a different female partner. Should you play your cards right, you can develop a mutual relationship between your character and a female lead. Unlike Doki Doki Literature Club, with all its references and dark themes, Katawa Shoujo is a straight-up romance, with a bit of drama and comedy thrown in.

However, as mentioned, it contains mature content such as scenes and dialogues that depict intimate scenes. Still, it doesn’t go into a full-blown mature territory, keeping its depictions respectful and relevant to the story. The only disadvantage of this classic is that it lacks voice acting, which would have driven the emotions even more. Still, it has a lot of content for you to go through.

A classic visual novel

If you’re a fan of visual novels, Katawa Shoujo is a title that must’ve made an appearance in friendly conversations—and rightfully so. It offers a unique premise but doesn’t forget to treat its characters with compassion and respect. You can expect a lot of content to let you play for hours, with multiple paths and endings to pursue. As far as VNs go, this is one must-have.
